SOUTHLAND SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPS 2024

The sport of Orienteering is the skill of finding your way around a pre-set course by reading your map and fitting it with the terrain around you.  

The Southland Orienteering Club welcomes and encoursgesall students from Years 5 -13 to give it a go.

VENUE: Camp Mauritangi, Fosbender Park

SOUTHLAND SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING CHAMPS 2024

The Orienteering Championships will be held on Sunday 19 May with students assembling at the Camp Mauritangi end of Fosbender Park by 10.00am, registration open at 10.30am as the orienteering commences at 11am.

Where: Camp Mauritangi end of Fosbender Park

 (from the city, travel towards Oreti Beach, continue over the Oreti River bridge and go past the Cabbage Tree Restaurant and you will see the entrance signposted on the right).

Parents are required to transport their own child to and from the venue.

When you arrive, go to the registration tent to collect your E-Stick and descriptions.  The control descriptions will also be on the map.

Check that the course descriptions you get are the CORRECT ONES for your course number.

Read the instructions regarding the maps of the area, hazards and special safety information on the notice board and check what course you are doing. Have a good look at the map on display. Note the position of the finish control so you don’t miss it when you finish. Prepare yourself for the start, have a drink of water, choose the right clothing for the conditions, and remember your whistle. Be at the start 6 min before your start time.

Before you get to the start line make sure you know which course you are doing – this will also be displayed on the notice board. Nothing worse than picking up the wrong map!

Maps of the area will be on display. Control flags will also be on display. Club members will help you if you need it. 

 Events 

• Year 7 & 8 Boys Novice

• Year 7 & 8 Girls Novice

• Year 7 & 8 Boys Experienced

• Year 7 & 8 Girls Experienced

There is a cost to compete of $10 per individual or $10 for the novice team. The entry fee is based on the maps issued. 

A novice team is made up of 2 people ($5 each person)

In the experienced classes students must compete on their own but in the novice classes they can compete as an individual or with a partner.

Students are to wear their James Hargest sports uniform, top and black shorts.

Please ensure your child has plenty of food and drink for the day.
